Community Gathers to Empower Young Girls at 7th Annual Shoe Giveback Event

400 Girls Receive Shoes, Backpacks, School Supplies & Inspiration

LA PUENTE, CA – AUGUST 6, 2015 – Days before the school bell will ring, 400 elementary school girls will get the “red carpet” treatment with designer shoes, backpacks filled with school supplies, free haircuts, and will be inspired to dream and succeed in school at the 7th Annual Shoe Giveback Event. The event is Friday, August 14, 2015 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Villacorta Elementary (located at 17840 E. Villacorta Street, La Puente, 91744). This year has expanded to include 400 pre-selected students in need from four elementary schools in the Rowland Unified School District: Hurley, Northam, Villacorta, and new this year, Yorbita.

The feel good, “girl-empowerment” Giveback Event is founded by Latina small business owner Monica Gonzales, CEO of Aldabella Scarpa Children’s Boutique in the city of Covina. “We want these young girls to have an amazing, positive experience and not allow circumstances in their lives to create limits. Our community supports them and our goal is to help them dream big and yes, it begins with a pair of shoes,” said Gonzales. Since 2008 she has hosted the annual “Shoe Giveback Event” in her hometown of La Puente. This year, the I Matter Foundation partners with Aldabella Scarpa to provide the biggest Shoe Giveback event including 400 young girls in need.

The community has donated school supplies with support from Pirates Dinner Adventure in Buena Park, and they will be filled in backpacks provided by California Credit Union. In addition to designer “I Matter” tennis shoes from Aldabella Scarpa, the elementary girls will meet radio personality/author Josefa Salinas, enjoy cupcakes from The Cake Mamas, receive free haircuts by Super Cuts (off Azusa Ave. in Covina), enjoy tacos by Taco Nazo, take part in craft activities from Options Enrichment Program, booths include jewelry by OMG Accessories, school essentials by Friends of the Heart and Folklorico Dance Entertainment by Ballet Folklorico Zapateando Con Pasion. Additional sponsors are Huy Fong Foods, Inc., Walmart City of Industry, Krispy Kreme (off Azusa Blvd. in City of Industry), Stater Brothers (Amar & Azusa), Starbucks (Hacienda Blvd., City of La Puente), CVS (off Sunset Ave. in La Puente), ECOLAB, SpeedZone and event photos by Marked by Love Photography.
